The number of tourists to Kerala has crossed 10-million market in 2011. Now the total is 10, 11 million and this is against the 9.2 million in 2010. This data was unveiled lately by Kerala Tourism Department. There was an increase in tourists from 659,265 in the previous year to 732,980 in 2011. The inflow of domestic tourists also increased to a great extends. It was earlier 8.5 million, and now it got increased to 9.3 million. During the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of tourists. The number of domestic tourists rose to 5.2 million in 2001.
From Rupees 17,348 Crore, total revenue from tourism increased to Rupees 19,037 Crore. This is the figure of 2011. During the last 10 years, there has been a five-fold jump in the revenue. In order to increase the flow of tourists to Kerala, the Kerala tourism department has implemented some activities. Road shows in Gulf countries were conducted for increasing the tourism of the state. The tourism department has identified the potential of northern Malabar region, and is planning to increase the traffic to the region.
The Kerala Tourism Department is also planning to identify places that could be made into a tourist destination. By increasing the accessibility and popularizing places, more and more tourists could be attracted to the place. For the development of tourism in the northern states, a special package ‘Eastern tourism Corridor’ will be implemented by Kerala Tourism Department.
The state is now working for the promotion of ‘Know Bekal’ a promotional campaign for Bekal. This will be also increasing the beach tourism of the state. There are many tourism activities co ordinate along with the visit of tourists. At Alappuzha, the tourists are allowed to get hands on experience of how rice is cultivated in Kerala.
