| Kerala is a land endowed with forests. Due to the favorable climate and monsoons, forests are dark and thick. There are many kinds of wild animals in the forests. Also there are many bird species. Most of the forests of Kerala are converted to wildlife sanctuaries. The animals and birds are allowed to live freely in their natural environment. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 90.422 Sq.Km. 100 Mm rainfall is received in the area. This place has limitation for the rain as it gets only limited rain in the year. The nearest airport to reach Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is Coimbatore and Cochin.
This sanctuary has Xerophytic Species. The forests are not very misty but are dry. You can see deciduous forests here. There are also wetlands. There also different wild animals like Sambar, Gaur, Spotted Deer and Elephant. There are also different endangered species found in this region.
Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park covers an area of 97 Sq.Km. There is a lake near by the sanctuary. This is Periyar Lake. The nearest airport is at Cochin. This is 155 Kms away from the national park. In winter months the forest is covered with frost. The forest is always wet. The rainfall over this region is 4500 mm. Eravikulam National Park was established in 1975. The main reason for setting up the national park was to protect the Nilgiri Thahr. There are many rare animal and bird species found in the national park.
Shola Forest, Rolling Grasslands can be seen in the national park. Nilgiri Langur, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Panther, Civet Cats, Wild Dogs,Tigers and many more animal species are found in the forest.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is very famous sanctuary. You can reach here through train. It is 114 kilometers from Kumarakom. The nearest place to the sanctuary is Kumily. There are also good roads, so that you can easily reach the place. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 77 Sq.Km.
The monsoons come arrive at June to November. This was made a sanctuary in 1976. An arch dam was constructed at Idukki. Hydro electric power is obtained from the dam. You can see Punnappa, Vediplavu, Palai, Kuntherekka and many other species of plants. Wild Pig, Leopard Tiger, Elephant, Deer, Woodpecker, Hornbill, Kingfisher, Cobra, Python etc are found in this jungle.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
This is located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake. If you are a bird watcher, then you will find this as a treasure. So many different bird species can be found here. Migratory birds are common sight here. You can see parrots, skylark, woodpecker etc. Vembabad lake cruise allows you to spot many of these birds. There is an island on the lake called Pathiramanal. There are many bird species here also. The best time for visit will be June and August.
