The Idamalayar Dam is located on the Imadalayar River. Even thought the dam was built as a part of hydro electric project and irrigation, this has become a very popular tourist destination. The dam is located somewhat near to Bhhothathankettu. Periyar River is originated from Anaimalai Hills which is at an elevation of 2,520 meter above sea level.
The Imadalayar River is a tributary of the Periyar River and is very beautiful. You will see dense forest around the dam. Cruising over the dam is very demanding by tourists. You will see different kinds of birds and wild animals on banks. The place is great for trekking. The hills are not that steep and with the guidance from a trekking expert, you might indulge in trekking. The dam covers an area of 28.3 Sq km and is a multipurpose reservoir.
The Kerala State Electricity Board operates the dam as the dam is mainly used to generate hydro electricity. An annual energy of output of 380 GW.h is produced by the dam. You will see so much of landscapes from the top of the dam and no one can resist you from taking a snap of this place on your camera.
