The festive season of Onam, is the time of the year Keralites from here and across the world wait for every year. Keeping in view the importance and significance of these celebrations even Kerala holiday packages have festive offers, which would help you experience these celebrations at its best. You would be able to witness the sights and sounds of Kerala that is sure to be an experience of a lifetime in case you have never experienced it before. So, here’s a closer look at what Onam is all about.

In essence, Onam is a harvest festival, which falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam that falls between August end and at the beginning of September. You could look at these celebrations as a reward for the efforts that have been put in towards receiving a good harvest. The highlights of this festival include snake boat races in Allepy, delightful Onam sadhya, floral carpets or ‘pookkalam’, ada payasam, traditional saris with golden boarders and most importantly folklore.

The Onam Sadhya is something that you should defiantly try out without fail, since it is Kerala served on a platter. This is nothing less than a feast, featuring over 20 curries, several ladles of piping hot rice all dished up on a banana leaf. You would be able to have this at restaurants and homes across the state especially on Thiru Onam, which is the day of Onam.

The best way to get an encapsulated view of the week long festivities that take place during this season, you must be at Trivandrum at this time. This is because the Tourism board puts up cultural shows, handicrafts, food stalls and folk art on display. This would be a great way to experience all the festivities at its best.
So what are you waiting for? Book Kerala holiday packages and enjoy a fulfilled Onam in Kerala!

When you think about Kerala I’m sure that the images of lush green vegetative cover, sandy beaches and the backwaters, will crop up in your mind. But that’s not all that Kerala has on offer. An aspect which several tourists miss when they visit this region is the reason behind why Kerala has been an age old favourite of travellers and traders from across the world. Any guesses? If you’re still scratching your head, then it’s because of the spice trail through Kerala, which have given this region, name, fame and several ardent followers.

The spice trade that took place back in the day saw traders from the Mediterranean take away cloves, cinnamon, ginger, pepper and cardamom. There is substantial proof that the ancient Phoenician’s came in search of these lovely spices to add flavour to their wine, food and meat. Even the French and English constantly fought over to gain control of this region, mainly the spice plantations.

In case you are still thinking what spices are, they are nothing but aromatic substances that have a vegetable origin. They are often used for flavoring as well as preservatives. Innumerable spices exhibit medicinal values as well. For instance, turmeric can prevent diabetes and is a well known anti oxidant as well.

It’s lovely to walk through a spice plantation as you would find varied varieties of spices, all grown at one place. However, the traditional spices that are cultivated here by farmers here include ginger, cinnamon, pepper and cardamom. Other spices that are cultivated in this region are namely oregano, vanilla, mint, thyme, sage, bay leaf and rosemary. You would be able to get a closer look at how these are cultivated, transported and follow the spice route.
It would be safe to say that you can spice up your trip to Kerala by visiting this route!

Have you had to urge to feel the stillness of nature drawing away yourself from the relentless chatter and noise of city life? Then, you must experience the stillness at Silent Valley National Park, Palakkad, Kerala. This National Park is one of the country’s largest tropical evergreen rainforests and is a source of rich biodiversity. In the 1970’s this National Park became a hotbed of agitation and anger as the existence of the park was threatened by the construction of a dam on the Kunti river that flow out of the valley.

The National Park is situated in the Kundali Hills which is around 40 km from Mannarkkad which is in the Western Ghats. In 1980, this park was chosen to core of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. The valley was named so since the loud calls of the Cicadas were heard everywhere, something that is quite unlikely anywhere else.

This region is home to a host of wildlife that includes deers, tigers as well as native mammals such as Civet Cat, Lion Tailes Macaque, Malabar Giant Squirrel and Nilgiri Langur. You could also take up a lovely boat trip, which would give you an opportunity to observe the rich animal diversity that this park offers.

Apart from that there are over 400 varieties of moth, 100 species of butterflies that can be found here. Birds like the Great Indian Hornbill, Tree Pie, Malabar Hornbill, Barbets, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers, Drongoes as well as Parakeets can be found in abundance here. Then you’d also be able to see a host of lizards, amphibians and snakes as well. Additionally, then there are over 110 species of plant species here, that are known to have medicinal properties.
The best time to visit this National Park would be between the months of September and March, as you can experience the pleasant winter. You can reach this National Park from the nearest airport which is at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu that is 55 km away. Or you can reach the park on road by travelling from Mannarkkad, which is 40 km and offers regular bus services.

However, when you are on your trip here, don’t forget to take a backwaters cruise and experience the stillness of nature that you can experience here. So, what are you waiting for? Book your tickets, make your reservations and head to the Silent Valley National Park, which would prove to be an experience of a lifetime.
